How GreekHunter Came To Be

GreekHunter.com was developed in the summer of 2001 in West Point, Georgia.  The red letter date was on June 22nd when the light bulb came on and the idea was born.  It got started because a guy who had been asked to help develop a Web Site for his two son's Fraternity at the University Of Alabama saw a huge need for easy communications between college students in the Greek organizations.  After being asked to help come up with a site, the first step was to look around on the web and see how all of the other Fraternity and Sorority Chapters set up their individual sites.  It was soon discovered that there were hundreds, maybe thousands of sites out there, which were very good, but it was very difficult to find any of them easily, and when you did, you had to write down the addresses to be able to go back to them again later.  It was noticed that some of them had email addresses for their members, but many of them were out of date or vague.  Being that the country boy did not have enough pens and paper to write down everything or everyone's email address, he decided to develop a National scheme that would be easy to use and remember.  Of course there had to be a little thought put in to the name to be used for our grand system that would become the new communications standard between chapters.  I consulted some of the Pi Kapp brothers who happened to be around and the name GreekHunter was born.  I wonder how they ever came up with that?

Over the next six months we set out to build and test our new system that can be used by virtually every Greek chapter in the country.  The easy to remember naming scheme has been put into place and the first chapter to be set up is the Omicron Chapter of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity at the University Of Alabama.  With their help and numerous ideas and suggestions, the first few months were used to get the system fully developed and in place.  All you need to know is someone's name or the office of the person you need to send email to and you automatically know their email address.  Being around the computer and internet business for years, this was still a new challenge to set up the system to be easy to use for everyone.  Lastly, the Web Servers would be set up on Linux Servers for dependability and the Email servers would be set up as a web based platform from the start.  Interland, in Atlanta, Georgia was contacted and they would house the servers as they are a big player in the hosting business and this gives you the peace of mind that your site will stay up and you can depend on your email to get there when needed.  With the email being web based, you can access your email  from most anywhere.  The Web Site address's are just as easy to remember and can be quickly identified for most every school.
